Las Vegas home inspector reports on a neglected pool
A problem that this Las Vegas home inspector has seen plague many Las Vegas neighborhoods since the foreclosure boom began is abandoned and unmaintained pools. Hundreds, if not thousands, of homes throughout Las Vegas and Southern Nevada have pools, spas and other water features that have been abandoned. This issue has become routine for many of the home inspections in Las Vegas, and it is an important safety item to inspect, not only for the home buyer, but for the entire community. Left unattended, stagnant pools are more than an eyesore. They can also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. Unsecured pools and spas can also be a safety hazard, especially for small children. You do not need to be a home inspector to know that this pool in the image is neglected, but your home inspector in Las Vegas will have the information you need to help correct the issue. The neglected pool problem has prompted the Southern Nevada Health District to take action. SNHD employs a team of field inspectors. After receiving a call about a green or abandoned pool, the district dispatches an inspector to the property who is empowered to access the property and chemically treat the water, if needed, to guard against disease. The problem is easily resolved through chemical treatment and filtration, or by draining the pool water into the homes sewer clean-out port so the water can be recycled; treated, filtered and returned to the local water supply. SNHD will also mail a notice to the legal owner of the property with the problematic pool. Subsequent visits, if required, are billed to the legal owner of the property.

Your Las Vegas home inspection will include a look at the pool for any obvious problems, but, the home inspector will recommend that you have a qualified pool service perform a more detailed pool inspection.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority provides useful tips and advice on how to properly drain pools as well as useful water conservation tips and rebate programs for pool owners. Visit http://www.snwa.com/html/cons_pools.html for more information.
