Named for Mount Charleston, the highest point in the area, the town is in a valley of the Spring Mountains to the northwest of Las Vegas, noted for its hiking trails, and for the Mount Charleston Lodge, a rustic hotel. Temperatures are from 20 to 30 °F lower than in Las Vegas, making it a popular place for Las Vegans to escape the heat. Mount Charleston, peak is 11,918 ft (3,362 m), and is the highest point of the Spring Mountains, Nevada's third highest peak. The name “Charleston” was given to the peak by John C. Fremont while he was exploring this portion of Southern Nevada. The name refers to Charleston, South Carolina, which was Fremont's wife's hometown.

Mount Charleston is located approximately 35 miles northwest from Las Vegas in the Spring Mountains. The Spring Mountains divide the Pahrump Valley and Amargosa River basin from the Las Vegas Valley.
